Right now I’m working on PHP. I am using the Doctrine ORM and the jQuery JavaScript library. In my second project I used the Zend Framework . What are the various things I should learn to make a better site?
What are the various things to keep in mind or what are the various new things I should learn? Right now being I fresher we keep in mind about the for loops, minimum queries to database, less Ajax requests etc etc. Means these are the college tips we should keep in mind.

Yes, I agree with you, I am keeping all these things in my mind. Use classes, learn from mistake, etc., etc. You are not getting my question. I know experience matters and I am learning things. No doubt about it. But what I am asking is to increase the scope, meaning it’s like there is small boy who know to add two numbers which doesn’t include any carry forward like 23 + 34, 45 + 24, etc.
But as he doesn’t know about the carry forward logic like 89+78. He can’t increase his scope (scope of thinking level). That is what I’m asking here. What are classes, objects, functions and design patterns? This is what we have learned from our college level studies. We are using all those logics here in our office. But what’s next?
How to increase the scope of our thinking level? What’s the next step? How is Flickr handling so many hits per second? Machine learning, this is a keyword I got from somewhere. I think you can understand what I want to ask. Something like this.

Why call-to-action is needed in banner ads?

Every banner ad is designed with a simple purpose. That is to bring visitors to click on your banner, to visit certain site or share their personal data. A banner advertising simply asks visitors to do certain activity which is termed as call-to-action.
Why call to action is needed?
Call-to-action is needed so that the banner gets immediate clicks or more number of clicks from visitors. A call to action can increase your click-through rate (CTR) on the target website.
How a banner can be designed with strong call-to-action? You need to keep in mind the following approaches while designing your advertising banner:
Purpose: Your banner design ideas should be professional and should clearly tell the purpose of designing. Your banner ad should clearly reflect what you want to do, to collect data of viewers, showcase your products or company brand, generate clicks to your website or drive the visitors to affiliate website.
One call to action: Don’t put too many call-to-actions on a single banner ad. Think about the single end result or call-to-action that your banner will serve and design your banner accordingly.
Graphics and font: The graphics and text content should persuade the visitors to do an action. The font should be quickly readable and graphics will support the messages in headline, benefit sentence or question.
Interactivity: The banner ad can contain false form elements in graphic format like, text boxes, check boxes, radio buttons etc. Visitors try to fill data on them and instead they click on such banner ads. The advantage of interactive looking’ banner ads is they convince visitors to click on them.
Button text: Text within buttons is written in short. Button texts use strong call-to-action messages. These help the visitors what action to take. Texts like Sign Up Today’, Join Now’, Apply Now’, Be A Member’ narrow down the purpose and quickly drives visitors for the end result.
Time duration: If you can convince your customers that the offer shown in the banner ad is a limited time offer, then that will make visitors more interested for a call to action. Validity of great offer duration actually raises the urge to do something in consumer’s mind.
Call-to-action should be properly designed so that after seeing the banner it gets an immediate click. A banner with successful call-to-action will generate more traffic to your website. And once your banner ad has a call-to-action, you will be amazed by the large number of clicks it gets!

A good call to action button has several characteristics. Here are a few:
1. Color contrast
The color of the button should stand out from the surrounding elements on your website. So if you have a white background, don’t have a light button. Make it a dark color.
The Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce uses purple for this image to make the important Visitor Guide button stand out.
2. Give a few details
Some users want to know a little more information before they click on something. Keep it brief, but give them a few more details if it fits on your button and looks good.
If you’ll look at our buttons on the right, you’ll notice that we have the call to action statement in bold type, followed by a short explanation.
3. Don’t make it scary
There are some terms that people seem to shy away from. If a web user thinks they’re making a long term commitment that will be hard to get out of they’re less likely to click it.
Don’t say: “Register” or “Sign up”
Instead, say: “Receive Updates” or “Stay Connected”
These friendly terms are more inviting and people are more likely to click on it.
Defy the Bad Guy uses the phrase “Free Safety Tips Newsletter” rather than something like “Sign up to receive our newsletter”. After all, who doesn’t want to be safe? And who doesn’t like free?
4. Keep distractions to a minimum
It’s very easy to make a website too cluttered. But by adding a lot of stuff, we end up losing the effectiveness of what we started with.
Sometimes less is more. The Northern Neck Farm Museum keeps their home page very simple to emphasize the buttons on the left to make sure that the important items are easy to see and there are no unnecessary distractions.
5. Use white space
White space, as mentioned in our article on How to Make Your Web Content Look Amazing is the blank or empty space surrounding elements on your web page. White space can really make your call to action button stand out and get noticed.
6. Put it at the top of the page
The “above the fold” principle is what the user sees on their screen without scrolling down. If feasible, put your important call to action buttons “above the fold”.
A lot of times it’s not practical to put your call to actions at the top. Maybe it’s not how you want your website styled, or you have something else at the top that you want to highlight. That’s OK…this is just one way to do it.
The Los Angeles Regional Food Bank uses two techniques for their call to action button – positioning it at the top of the page, and high contrast. They have a dark green button on a white background.
7. Give more than just one option
We always want people to “Buy Now” but what if they’re not ready? They don’t want to “Buy Now”, but they do want to “Learn More”. Give them the option to do that.
A cautious customer will take baby steps towards the ultimate goal. In baseball, a walk, stolen base and a base hit scores 1 run…same as a 450 foot home run. Let them go at their own pace.
Constant Contact wants people to sign up for their free trial…but maybe people just want to “See how it works”.
8. Give the button a “hover” feature
Users like it when a button lights up when they hover the mouse over it. Our buttons on the right do this as well…they turn a slightly brighter yellow. It’s just an attractive, simple way to let your users know that it is in fact a button that you can click on.

In the classic 1984 hit, The Karate Kid , one of the most quotable lines is a perfect example of a clear call to action. Solution
There has to be a clear “call to action” on a website for it to really help the bottom line. This means every page should offer some information and then guide the visitor to fill in a form to request more information, request a call back, get a quote etc. Ideally the call to action should offer them something in return. For example after filling out the form the visitor could be entitled to a 5% discount, access to technical files or free chocolate!

A potential customer has just opened up your web site. They see a fancy introduction that grabs their attention. The little video sparks a laugh, and they stay on your site to find out more about your business. After getting through all the fancy animations, he or she is greeted with a beautifully-crafted home page with killer copy that keeps them reading all the way to the end. After the novelty of the menu animations and the gorgeous background wears off, your customer sits thinking.
He or she has no idea what to do next.
They could click on the About Us page to learn more about your company. They could visit your blog and see the latest news and opinions from you. They could look at your portfolio or list of services. The web site design looks great and has some great catch phrases, but the marketing message is getting lost and the visitors dont know what to do next. Now what?
The problem: no call to action. You led your customer to the water, but you did not tell him to drink. No matter how much you lead a customer, you have to make it very clear to them what they need to do next.
The following is a list of things you can do on your web site immediately to improve the conversion rate on your web site:
Make it simple. If you want the business, tell them to give you their contact information or tell them with a graphic to buy your service.
Make it valuable. Offer a free gift or consultation just for contacting you.
Make it clear. At the end of every page content, you should include a simple statement.. Call Us Today For More Information 555-1212. This tells people they can call you immediately for more information. Calls to action are one of the most important aspects of marketing and really need to be incorporated on every single page of your web site, not just the contact page.
One simple call to action that no one really takes advantage of is your contact phone number. For whatever reason, web designers started created web sites with a phone number only listed on the contact page with a link at the bottom of the web site in extremely small font type.
Some corporate web sites dont even list their phone number at all. When you consider how many people call companies for more information about their products and services, the fact that they dont have a phone number blows my mind.
Statistics show that people read web sites from top to bottom left to right. The best place to put a call to action? The top left of your web site. Very few companies put their phone number in the most effective place on the web site.. the top left. If its not there, the next best place is the top right. Your phone number should be on every page of your web site listed very visibly.
One of the most common features of a web site is a contact form. This also happens to be one of the main standard calls to action. On the contact page of every web site, there should be a form people can fill out to get more information about your product or service. In our experience, companies that have a form located on the homepage see a lot of response from that page as well as the contact page.
Without the call to action, your customer is lost, and so is your sale. You need to find a professional web design company to discuss your corporate web design and ensure that your customer will know what to do when they visit your site.

How can I improve? Please review my website!
I could use some help with my website. According to google I had 40 uniques today and a 52% bounce rate but the people who did stay, stayed for a average of 8:48. So if there staying around for 9 minutes what are they doing? The website is a little over 2 weeks old and gives short reviews. I am wondering if they are too short. Please give me your honest opinion of the website so that I may improve it. The link is in my sig.

the server. Server-based measurement programs measure activity based on the text files held on the web server (referred to as log files).
The way that browser-based measurement (or ASP measurement) works is that information from each browser that visits your website is recorded, usually in a database, and then the data is manipulated into reports you can read. Typically, these services ask you to paste some JavaScript code into your web pages. A cookie is used to determine which user is accessing the site. This is then tracked on a remote server and you log in to view the reports.
I recommend the use of ASP measurement because it only measures how people using a web browser use your website.
The log files record everything visiting your pages. They need a number of added filters to stop email harvesters, search engines and a variety of other software generated crawlers or bots from being counted as visitors; without them, you can get seriously skewed results. Server access is often required to get log file filtering right; otherwise, youre relying on your ISP to report your tracking correctly. The log files for one of our clients had 10 times as many page counts and visits recorded than shown by using an ASP. Thats a 1000% error!
Question 4.
What is an average conversion rate?
This is a very good question and is the topic of serious debate. In other marketing industries they dont guess. They have standards that everyone follows. Its whats needed in online marketing before any real answer can be given. Analytics companies, the big research companies, and digital media associations are going to have to come together to define these standards and then people are going to have to follow what is agreed before accurate numbers can be delivered consistently.
Currently, were in the process of trying to establish a worldwide benchmark with a number of other prominent people (The Web Analytics Association and the IAB to mention two) in the industry who also want to know the answer to this question. But meanwhile, here are some statistics weve gathered from different sources published both recently and over the last few years. I have figures for 3 types of websites: sales (e-commerce), lead generation, and subscription-based websites.
Generally, sales sites seem to range between a 0.5% and 8% with the average rate being 2.3% according to FireClick statistics published this year and figures published in 2003 by e-consultancy.com. In 2000, the average figure for sales conversion as published by shop.org was 1.8%. The high-end figures, I hasten to add, are the top e-tailers according to all sources. My own experience shows sites hitting between .5% and 5.3% so this seems to correlate with the published figures. Of course since there is no defined standard, these numbers have to be taken as a rule of thumb.
The only source we have for lead generation sites is e-consultancy.com. They quote 2-3% of users completing an optional or free registration process, with 5% being best in class. Our own experience again falls within the same ballpa rk.
Subscriptions to sale conversion is typically between 1 and 7% again the source is e-consultancy.com
We dont have figures for visitor to subscription conversion, but our own experience with clients has been between 1 and 8%. Our own site has consistently hit 15% for 6 months though the traffic is pretty well targeted and our methods very well tested.
Question 5.
How do you go about consistently improving conversion?
This is the million dollar question. What it really boils down to is treating web marketing as a science. We do it by consistently measuring how people use a website. Over time you will learn what works and what doesnt and stop wasting your time on the things that dont work.
First we look at the technical aspect of the website. Its amazing how many people overlook and ignore thousands of people who dont use Windows XP with Internet Explorer at a screen resolution of 1024×768. First make sure that you develop something that works for everyone.
One of the next areas we look at is where the traffic comes from. It allows you to concentrate your efforts on your best chance of generating converting traffic. Then we get into reducing the average website bounce rate. The lower the average bounce, the higher the number of people surfing your website and seeing the value of your offer. The higher the number who see your offer, the better the chance of a sale. Checking bounce rates also usually brings up some juicy problems to be solved.
Then look at testing and improving copy and graphical content, running split tests and measuring bounce rates on copy or simply testing the click-through on links. We do much more, but the basic premise is this: test and measure, follow up with experimentation, and then with more testing and more measuring. Sounds like science class doesnt it?
Summary
In part three of this series of articles well be looking at where traffic arrives from and how that effects conversion, specific search engine queries, PPC issues and other general topics. To summarize, I am suggesting that if you begin to scientifically measure and improve your websites based on facts and findings, not guesswork and theory, you will begin to improve your conversion rates.
